Human Resources and Employees

Many times, managers and employees believe, HR is the unit to take care of employees. They take Human Resources as the social care unit in the organization. This is a huge mistake. HR is not the department for employees, but it has to develop and run tools for managers to work with their employees.

Human Resources has to keep the organization healthy, which means it has to provide the tools for the managers and it has to keep the organization balanced externally. The daily job in managing employees is the main role of the management. The manager is not paid for the expert knowledge, but he or she is paid for being the people manager and for helping the subordinates to reach their goals.

HR provides the support the managers to be successful in the role of being the people managers. Human Resources monitors the market around the organization and introduces new policies and procedures to stay competitive.

Human Resources is responsible for the global policies. As it has to allow to managers to manage their employees, Human Resources introduces many benefit, compensation policy, goal setting process and many others. But HR does not use the policies and tools, the managers are the major users.

The employees should contact HR just in case, they have the feeling the policies and tools are not used properly or they need to answer a specialized question, which cannot be easily answered by the manager. HR does not act as the general manager for the organization. HR has a lot of training courses for managers to become real people managers and Human Resources provides the feedback to managers about their results in the area.

Human Resources is responsible for the design and development of the HR Tools in the area of the retention, motivation and attraction of employees and teaching the managers to use them properly. When the employees are not satisfied, they should always contact their manager and they should discuss honestly the possibilities to bring a significant improvements into their department. But they have to stay within the general HR policies and they cannot ask for more as it would bring a huge dis-balance into the whole organization.

HR is not the department to identify and care about the individual employee. It is the managerial role of the manager and the manager has to explain to his or her employees the reasons for the selection and next steps. The manager cannot hide himself or herself behind “evil Human Resources”.
