Base Salary and Motivation
The base salaries have a very weak link with the motivation. The motivation is the area, where the manager can excel, the base salary is a tool to support the effort of the manager. Many organization exchange the motivational role of the manager by the higher base salary, but the result does not come.
The base salary motivates employees to join the organization, it makes them to accept the job offer. After several months, the base salary does not motivate and the employees can lose their focus. The motivation needs to be refreshed constantly and the employees have to be motivated by the new challenges, not by increasing the base salary.
The base salary has no long term motivational role for the organization, it attracts the potential employees to join the organization. When the people are the members of the organization, they need other stimulants to keep them happy and motivated to work harder.
The managers tend to believe, when they have the issue with the employee, it can be solved by the extraordinary salary increase for the employee. It is the easiest solution for the manager, but it can be pretty expensive for the organization, when Human Resources accepts such a practice.
The organization has to keep its compensation policy and the managers should not be allowed to motivate the employees by the extraordinary salary increases and it increases the costs of the organization with no impact on the performance of the organization.
